warm desk lamp light and quiet evening room

Sensory description

That evening only the desk lamp was on, casting a warm yellow circle over the table. A plate of hot food was in front of me, steam still rising and carrying a faint smell of seasoning into the room. Outside the window it was already dark, and now and then I heard voices from the corridor or street, quickly swallowed by the night air.

What cannot be recorded as data

An order history or shopping receipt can show what I ate, but it cannot record the moment I realised I had gone through the whole day without saying any Chinese out loud, or the small drop in my mood that came with that thought. It also cannot capture how ordinary and slightly empty the scene felt at the same time.
